Flywheel’s Starter plan is $25/month billed annually for 25,000 visits; Kinsta’s store-recommended plan is $50/month for 65,000 visits with 4 PHP threads. What Flywheel is, and what WP Engine ownership means for a store

Flywheel has been a WP Engine company since 2019 (source). Its homepage describes it as “the best managed hosting for busy creatives” and “everything you need to grow your agency,” and the sales pitch is aimed at people who manage many client sites: white-label billing, site transfers, a local development app, and StudioPress themes bundled in (source). The product decisions follow that audience. Plans are priced by number of sites and visits, the higher tiers are named Freelance and Agency, and support runs 24/7 on chat with phone hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central on weekdays (source).

For a WooCommerce owner the ownership detail matters in one specific way. Flywheel’s own site says you can “run a WooCommerce store with WP Engine’s eCommerce hosting platform” (source). Flywheel does not stop you installing WooCommerce on a regular plan, but the store-specific features (WP Engine’s store caching, search, and cart tooling) live on the parent company’s platform, on the parent company’s price list. If your agency already builds on Flywheel, that is a convenient hand-off. If you are the merchant, it means the plan you compare with Kinsta is a general WordPress plan, and the store-grade plan is a different product from a different brand.

Pricing, visits, and what is billed on top

Flywheel’s current pricing page lists three tiers, each shown as an annual rate with two months free: Starter at $25/month ($300/year) for 1 site, 25,000 visits, 10 GB storage, and 50 GB bandwidth; Freelance at $96/month ($1,150/year) for 10 sites, 100,000 visits, 20 GB storage, and 200 GB bandwidth; and Agency at $242/month ($2,900/year) for 30 sites, 400,000 visits, 50 GB storage, and 500 GB bandwidth, plus a Custom tier (source). Third-party reviews list the month-to-month rates as $30, $115, and $290, and a $15 Tiny plan for 5,000 visits that no longer appears on the main pricing page (source). Visit overages are $1 per 1,000 extra monthly visitors; Performance Insights, Flywheel’s page-speed reporting add-on, is $25/month for the first site, and Managed Plugin Updates is $8/month per site.

Kinsta’s single-site plans start at $35/month or $350/year for 35,000 visits; the plan Kinsta recommends for stores is $50/month ($42/month billed annually) for 65,000 visits and 250 GB of CDN transfer, and the ladder runs $90 (125k), $170 (315k), $290 (500k), and $375 (750k) (source). Overages are $0.50 per 1,000 visits, $0.05 per GB of CDN transfer, and $2 per GB of disk per month, with a visit defined as a unique IP in a 24-hour window (source). Redis object caching is a $100 per site per month add-on and extra staging environments are $20/month each (source).

Put the two side by side at 100,000 visits: Flywheel Freelance at $96/month gives you ten sites and no store-specific tooling; Kinsta’s 125k plan at $90/month gives you one site, 6 PHP threads, APM, and a documented cache-exclusion policy for cart and checkout. On a per-store basis Kinsta is the more specific product; on a per-agency basis Flywheel spreads the cost across clients.

Compute: threads you can see vs a VPS you cannot

Kinsta publishes its concurrency. PHP threads per plan are 2 on the 35k plan, 4 on the 65k plan, 6 on the 125k and 315k plans, and 8 on the 500k and 750k plans, inside a container configured with 12 CPUs and 8 GB of RAM (source). Because cart, checkout, and my-account pages are excluded from Kinsta’s cache, every shopper in checkout holds a thread for the length of the request, and the thread count is the real ceiling for a store.

Flywheel describes its infrastructure as VPS rather than shared, running NGINX with server-side caching (FlyCache, with configurable exclusions), a Fastly-powered CDN, nightly backups kept for 30 days, and a choice of 7 server locations (source). It does not publish a PHP-worker count on the pricing page. Reviews describe the platform as running on Google Cloud (source), but the plan pages do not state CPU or RAM figures, so a store cannot size checkout concurrency from public information.

Where each plan stops for a growing store

Flywheel stops the moment the store is the business rather than one of an agency’s projects. The plan is general-purpose WordPress; the answer to “can it handle Black Friday checkout” is a referral to WP Engine’s eCommerce platform, which means a second vendor conversation, a second price list, and a migration. The 99.9% uptime figure is a homepage statement, and the pricing page carries no SLA terms, credits, or exclusions (source). Nightly backups mean a bad deploy can cost up to a day of orders. None of that is a problem for a $200K store managed by an agency that also runs its brochure site; all of it is a problem at $2M.

Kinsta stops at the thread count. The $90 and $170 plans both cap at 6 threads, and a launch that triples traffic for an hour does not get more compute; it gets queued requests. The SLA reads differently on the plans page (“up to 99.99%”) and in the legal document, where the standard commitment is 99.9% with credits of 5–20% of the monthly fee, claimable within 30 days (source). Neither Flywheel nor Kinsta entered Review Signal’s 2026 WordPress or WooCommerce benchmarks, so there is no current independent load-test data for either (source).
