Flywheel vs WP Engine for WooCommerce: Same Company, Different Store Fit

Flywheel vs WP Engine for WooCommerce: what differs between WP Engine’s two brands after the eCommerce plans ended, and where each stops for a $1M store.

Flywheel vs WP Engine for WooCommerce compares two brands of one company, and the difference matters for a store. Flywheel is the agency brand with 99.9% uptime and no WooCommerce add-ons; WP Engine withdrew its eCommerce plans on October 15, 2025 and now sells a quote-based eCommerce Performance Pack. Past $1M a year, both need a custom tier.

One company, two brands: what is actually different

Flywheel’s site footer reads “© 2013–2026 WPEngine, Inc.” and its homepage sends store owners elsewhere: “Drive growth for your WooCommerce store with WP Engine’s eCommerce hosting platform” (source). Flywheel is aimed at “busy creatives” and agencies managing client sites, with collaboration tools, Local for development, and a lower entry price. WP Engine is the brand that carries the WooCommerce-specific engineering, the enterprise SLA, and the application monitoring.

Under the hood both run on Google Cloud with a proprietary full-page cache (FlyCache at Flywheel, EverCache at WP Engine) and a CDN in front. What each brand sells on top of the server is different, and for a store that is what you are comparing.

Flywheel: plans, limits, and what it does for a store

Flywheel’s public plans are Starter at $25/month billed as $300/year (1 site, 25,000 visits, 10 GB storage, 50 GB bandwidth), Freelance at $96/month billed as $1,150/year (up to 10 sites, 100,000 visits, 20 GB, 200 GB), Agency at $242/month billed as $2,900/year (up to 30 sites, 400,000 visits, 50 GB, 500 GB), and Custom for “millions+” of visits (source). All plans include FlyCache, a Fastly-powered CDN, PHP 8.2, free SSL, nightly backups with 30-day retention, staging, free migrations, and 24/7 chat support. Visits beyond the plan cost $2 per 1,000 and storage $1 per GB; Flywheel states it never shuts a site off for overages (source).

Flywheel does not publish a PHP worker count per plan; its support documentation says workers “are not assigned a set amount” and “can be adjusted as needed to ensure site performance (within plan parameters)” (source). That is hard to capacity-plan a checkout against. FlyCache does handle WooCommerce correctly by default: cart, checkout, and my-account paths and their localized variants are excluded from the cache, and pages otherwise cache for 90 minutes (source).

Flywheel’s uptime is stated as 99.9%, attributed to auto-healing on its Google Cloud platform (source). It offers five data center regions: Iowa, Montreal, London, Belgium, and Sydney (source). Monitoring is a Performance Insights add-on that produces reports on load time, TTFB, and caching trends, not APM (source). There is no WooCommerce-specific product on the Flywheel price list.

WP Engine: eCommerce plans ended, Performance Pack began

WP Engine’s support page is direct: “As of Oct 15th 2025, eCommerce plans can no longer be purchased.” Existing eCommerce accounts are grandfathered (source). What those plans bundled, including enhanced WooCommerce caching, moved into a site-level add-on: the eCommerce Performance Pack.

The pack lists nine components: Live Cart (removes cart AJAX calls while keeping the cart dynamic), EverCache for WooCommerce, Stripe Connect and Stripe Checkout, Smart Search AI with recommendations, NitroPack, Smart Plugin Manager, Dynamic Plugin Loading, Site Monitoring, and Slow Query Monitor (source). One license covers a site’s production, staging, and development environments. WP Engine’s launch post, updated February 11, 2026, says it is available “on any managed hosting plan”; existing customers can buy it from the User Portal, while new customers are told to “reach out to our team,” and no price is published on either page (source). WP Engine’s own 2025 review claims sellers on the pack see “an average 128% increase in mobile page speeds,” a vendor figure rather than an independent one (source).

The hosting underneath is WP Engine’s regular Managed Hosting Platform. The plans page lists Essential from $28/month on annual billing (1 to 30 sites, 25,000 to 400,000 visits, 10 to 50 GB storage, 75 GB bandwidth); Core is quoted (30 to 50 sites, 400,000 to 800,000 visits, 550 GB bandwidth); Enterprise is custom (source). The “99.99% SLA” appears only on Core and Enterprise, and application performance monitoring is listed as “Not included” on Essential and an “Optional add-on” on Core and Enterprise. Third-party tracking as of March 2026 lists the Essential tiers at $25 to $230 per month on annual billing (Startup, Professional, Growth, Scale), Core from about $400/month, and visit overages at $2 per 1,000 (source).

Uptime SLA and monitoring: where the brands separate

WP Engine’s SLA sets standard service availability at 99.95% with a credit of 5% of monthly fees per full hour of downtime beyond target, and an enhanced 99.99% tier, for services labeled as such, with a 3% credit per half hour (source). Flywheel publishes a 99.9% uptime figure and no equivalent credit schedule on its plan page. The gap between 99.9% and 99.99% is about 8.7 hours versus 52 minutes of allowed downtime a year.

On monitoring, WP Engine’s Site Monitoring pings the production domain every five minutes and alerts on 404 and 500 errors; it is a paid extension and is also bundled in the Performance Pack (source). Code-level tracing, WP Engine’s Application Performance product built on New Relic, is only available on Core and Enterprise as an add-on. Flywheel has neither product. For a store this is the practical difference: on Flywheel you learn checkout is slow from customers; on WP Engine you can pay to see it on a dashboard.

What independent 2026 benchmarks show

Hostingstep’s year-long benchmark (January to December 2025, entry plans, Pingdom checks every 60 seconds from 19 North American locations) recorded WP Engine at 365 ms TTFB and 99.9952% uptime, with a 27 ms load-test response and 0% errors; Flywheel was not tested (source). That test hits a cached homepage, not a checkout with a full cart. The difference shows up on the uncached path, where WP Engine’s Live Cart and Dynamic Plugin Loading exist and Flywheel has none.

Which one to pick under $1M in GMV

The third option: when neither fits a high-traffic store

Past roughly $1M a year, Flywheel vs WP Engine narrows to WP Engine Core or Enterprise with the Performance Pack, a quoted bundle of hosting plus add-ons on a general WordPress platform. At that revenue a slow checkout or a launch outage costs more than the hosting bill, and the question becomes whether the platform was built around a store.

Urumi is the platform layer for WooCommerce stores doing $1M to $50M in GMV: horizontal auto-scaling across multi-zone Google Cloud, a 99.99% uptime SLA with active-active zones and auto-failover, fully managed APM with traces, logs, and alerts, isolated staging per branch with one-click rollback, and a WooCommerce-aware cache that handles cohorts and A/B variants. It is priced for that tier; it is not a cheaper substitute for a $25 Flywheel plan. Do Amore, a custom engagement-ring brand, moved to Urumi with every custom plugin intact and zero downtime, and its ring pages went from 5.9 s to 0.9 s while order edits dropped from 8.1 s to 0.67 s. Urumi publishes its own load-test results on the WooCommerce performance benchmark page: a 236 ms median cart response and a 321 ms median checkout with the edge cache disabled. Already have a team or an agency? They ship faster with the grunt work covered. Details at managed WooCommerce hosting on Urumi.

Frequently asked questions

Is Flywheel owned by WP Engine?

Yes. Flywheel’s site carries the copyright of WPEngine, Inc., and its homepage refers WooCommerce store owners to “WP Engine’s eCommerce hosting platform.” Flywheel targets agencies and creatives; WP Engine carries the WooCommerce features, the 99.99% SLA tier, and monitoring.

Did WP Engine discontinue its WooCommerce hosting plans?

Yes. WP Engine’s support page states that eCommerce plans could no longer be purchased as of October 15, 2025, with existing accounts grandfathered. The replacement is the eCommerce Performance Pack, a site-level add-on for any managed hosting plan that includes Live Cart, EverCache for WooCommerce, and Site Monitoring; its price is not published.

Does Flywheel support WooCommerce?

Flywheel hosts WooCommerce sites and its FlyCache excludes cart, checkout, and my-account pages from caching by default. It does not sell WooCommerce-specific features, publish a PHP worker count, or offer APM, so it suits smaller stores and agency portfolios rather than high-traffic shops.

What uptime SLA do Flywheel and WP Engine offer?

Flywheel states 99.9% uptime without a published credit schedule. WP Engine’s SLA sets 99.95% availability with a 5% monthly-fee credit per full hour of excess downtime, and a 99.99% enhanced SLA on Core and Enterprise plans with a 3% credit per half hour.
